Smells like Christmas

I am really struggling this year on deciding what to buy my family and friends as Christmas gifts! There is a lot of competition amongst retailers just now, so if you shop around online you can get a reasonable discount or take advantage of Black Friday promotional codes too.

My sister is really difficult to buy for and we usually try to get something unusual for each other. This year I thought I would buy her a nice perfume set that she could use for special occasions or to wear ‘just because’.  There’s so many new perfume lines from the traditional brands and it’s hard to know which ones to go for. However I want to get one I know she’s not tried before and I think she prefers sweet but strong perfume so that has helped when I’ve been searching for the perfect fragrance. No one likes to be knocked out by the pungent smell of someone’s overpowering scent when you are standing next to them or in a lift, so I want to really take some time in making the right purchase.

So where to start? I went to my local House of Fraser perfume department and sampled some eau de parfums from brands like Chanel, Jo Malone, Jimmy Choo and Valentina. They were all available in 30ml, 50ml and 100ml bottles which offered variation but as its Christmas I wanted something a bit extra special that would be different than your average bottle of perfume. I didn’t want a simple stocking filler, this was to be something unique. The sales assistants were really helpful and friendly and offered me advice on the type of fragrances notes and tones I was looking for.

My search was nearly over – I got chatting to a lovely girl at the Giorgio Armani counter and she spent some time explaining the difference between the different scents to me. She asked about my sister’s age, lifestyle and what she liked and disliked in finding a signature fragrance. Quickly she settled on ‘Si’ – a new scent that has only been on the market for a few years (2013) but is still very refreshing and comes in a modern attractive bottle. I instantly liked the captivating aroma – opening notes of Sicilan bergamot, mandarin oil and neroli absolute.  The base notes of the on trend patchouli intertwine with amber and musky undertones in a sweet animalic accord of vanilla absolute. Even after it had been sampled on my skin for 10 minutes it was still addictively lingering and I couldn’t stop smelling my wrist!

I was sold on Si – I settled on a beautiful gift box that I hadn’t seen in other stores – a 100ml eau de parfum bottle with partnering 75ml shower gel and body lotion. I walked out feeling super proud of myself and knew that my sister would love the present – or should I just keep it for myself?!
